Often, we hear about people fighting for good in the world but have you ever come to a place where you were fighting for the good within yourself? You know yourself to be an overall “good” hearted person but feel as though there you have reaped no gains from it?
Sometimes, we can find ourselves wanting to quit on the fight of being a “good person” because of the brokenness that we are surrounded by daily. We have the news constantly reminding us of the illnesses and/or violence taking the lives of innocent people daily. We have social media, where the “cancel” culture will pull up a person’s dirt- past, present, and future…to not only discredit their work as an artist, teacher, preacher, (whatever their occupation may be) but to make them feel so much shame to the point many are driven to depression, isolation, suicide, and sadly for some….to the point of choosing to no longer being a “good-hearted” person.
When used as a noun, the definition of good can be described as “that which is morally right; righteousness.” Synonyms of the word good: virtue, righteousness, virtuousness, goodness, morality, ethicalness.
Overall, in this context, we can say that a good person, is a person who typically strives to do good for the benefit of others. However, what do we do when the good person feels as though they have been corrupted by the evilness of today’s society?
As believers, we are taught to not only be good people, but to be the person to turn the other cheek (Matthew 5:39) and to be a light in dark places. However, as the days go on, there are many believers who are turning away from their faith not because of God….but because of the pain they feel as though they must continuously endure from bearing the title, “a follower of Jesus”, which is often associated with being a “good” person.
One huge problem with this…. imagine being in a workplace where one light bulb goes out…. not as noticeable right? However, when multiple lights are burning out and the old ones are not being replaced…. you have a place that was once bright…. then dim…but now a full place of darkness.
The Lord is faithful in all ways according to (Psalm 33:4) ….He will raise up a person who will be the light in a dark place, but the question that remains is, will YOU be that light? Even amid what seems like complete darkness, I encourage you brothers and sisters, fight for the light within yourself. The reward, in itself, is knowing that at the end of the day, between you and the Lord….you know that you did all you could to be a light to the world.
“For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.” Acts 13:47, KJV
