Some people believe that dancing is a sin. It most certainly is not. Nowhere in the Bible does God refer to dancing as a sin (transgression of the law).

“Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.” – 1 John 3:4, KJV

God wants us to have joy. There are many examples in the Bible where Israel danced before the Lord. Many times, it was to praise God for victories, grace and mercy.

“Praise ye the Lord. Sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints. Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King. Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp. For the Lord taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation. Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.” – Psalm 149:1-5, KJV

We even read about King David dancing before the Lord and he was a man after God’s own heart.

 “And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.” – Acts 13:22 KJV

“And David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.” 2 Samuel 6:14, KJV

In fact, the Bible instructs us to praise God with dance and song!

“Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.”  – Psalm 150:4, KJV

What a wonderful way to express joy, give praise, fellowship with others and commune with God. Let’s explore some other benefits of dance that I am sure God is fully aware of. LOL!

Dance is a form of exercise. Although we most often don’t think of it as such. This is because when we are dancing, we are usually doing it for fun.  Just think about it. Most often when we are dancing we are also singing, laughing or smiling. 

There are many health benefits to dancing. Dance can improve our emotional, spiritual, mental and physical health. Dancing improves our mood. Dancing typically increases our heart rate bringing more oxygen to the brain. When the brain gets more oxygen it creates a healthier environment for neuroplasticity to occur. Neuroplasticity is when the brain creates new connections between brain cells. Oxygen also promotes the release of hormones in the brain, some of which help to grow new brain cells and others that assist with improving one’s mood.

Dance has been found to reduce stress levels, symptoms of anxiety and depression. Dancing can help to prevent Alzheimer’s disease but not in isolation of itself.  Dance helps to improve memory, coordination, attention, and cognitive functioning. Therefore, it also serves to be beneficial to those who suffer from ADHD and autism. Dance can also assist with social anxiety. For example, those suffering from social anxiety can participate in line dancing, salsa, ballroom, or other group dances. This exposes them to a social environment, offering them the opportunity to make connections with others without the pressure of having to conversate. Dancing can also boost confidence, building more positive self-esteem.

There are many styles of dancing to choose from. How exciting would it be to try at least one? Your technique does not have to be perfect. Just enjoy the present moment and have fun.

There’s so much to gain! Hip hop, contemporary and ballroom are all good styles for keeping a keen mind. The following dance styles assist with brain functioning; freestyle, aerobic, tap, and hip hop. All of these styles of dancing help to relieve stress. And remember these are just the emotional, mental and spiritual benefits of dance. There are also physical benefits to dance as well.

In conclusion, when it comes to the word of God, dancing is absolutely permitted. God knows all the wonderful benefits it provides.  After all, dancing reduces the chances of having a mental health disorder. Just be mindful of how you dance, who you are dancing with and the purpose of your dance. Remember, everything is in moderation.

“Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.” – Philippians 4:5 KJV

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:” – Ecclesiastes 3:1 KJV

So, what do you have to lose? Let’s not waste another minute. Instead, let’s choose to be proactive and get up and dance! Dance in the privacy of your own home! Dance at church! Dance at weddings and birthday parties! Dance at social gatherings and dance classes! Dance like no one is watching! Dance like you have never danced before! But whatever you do, don’t stop dancing!
